Mt. Makalu is the fifth-highest mountain in the world, located in the Himalayas on the border between Nepal and China. It is an isolated peak southeast of Mt. Everest, and it stands at an elevation of 8,485 meters (27,838 feet) above sea level. Makalu is known for its challenging ascent, with steep pitches, technical sections, and severe weather conditions. The mountain was first climbed on May 15, 1955, by a French team led by Jean Franco. The standard route to the summit is via the southeast ridge, and climbers typically approach from the Nepalese side. The Makalu Barun Valley, which lies to the southeast of the mountain, is a protected area and is known for its diverse flora and fauna. Due to its difficulty and the technical challenges involved, Makalu is less frequently climbed than some of the other 8,000-meter peaks in the region. The mountain has a pyramidal shape, and its prominence makes it a striking feature of the landscape in the eastern Himalayas.
